This past week I was lucky enough to hang out with the Greenpeace Youth Network for a few days at their annual youth camp, Change It, in Seattle. I e-mailed some Greenpeace friends to ask if I could come help at the camp for a few reasons. 1) I went to the Greenpeace sponsored Direct Action Camp this past June and wanted to keep tabs on what Greenpeace is up to in my neck of the woods. 2) I’ll be a trainer at Oregon’s SPROG this upcoming week and I wanted to get a taste for what was to come. 3) I work for the Sierra Club now and I’m already seeing the debilitating effects of environmental infighting.

Greenpeace International has confirmed astonishing allegations by Ecological Internet that they actively promote and support the logging of ancient forests, at great expense to the Earth's climate. In their statement Greenpeace acknowledges they are "committed to protecting the worlds remaining ancient forests" yet support "the FSC as the only credible global certification system." What? Has Greenpeace become certifiably insane?

There is no denying the fact that Greenpeace supports Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) efforts to certify logging [search] of primary and old-growth forests as environmentally acceptable. It is a matter of public record. FSC's international board is chaired by a Greenpeace forest campaigner and they have long promoted FSC as the source of "green" timber. Greenpeace supports industrial ancient forest logging even as they are apparently suppressing their own report on specific problematic forest certifications. Transparency and depth of ecological understanding are not Greenpeace's strength.
