Prelude to the Chronic Poverty Report 2008: Escaping poverty traps via Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Blog July 2nd, 2008 at 10:41

image It is clear that many of today's poor will simply stay poor, even if economic growth is sustained. They are caught in one or more of five poverty traps: insecurity of life or livelihood; weak citizenship status; living in a deprived area; experiencing social discrimination; or held back by poor quality work. The second international Chronic Poverty Report, launched next week, shows that the poorest can be included in progress. ...(read more)...

Income Per Natural: Measuring Development as if People Mattered More Than Places via Poverty News Blog March 19th, 2008 at 20:51

image from the Center for Global DevelopmentHere is a link to a study from the Center for Global Development. What follows is a clip from the authors introduction:Michael Clemens and Lant PritchettIt is easy to learn the average income of a resident of El Salvador or Albania. But there is no systematic source of information on the average income of a Salvadoran or Albanian. In this new working paper, research fellow Michael Clemens and non-resident fellow Lant Pritchett create a new statistic: income per natural -- the mean annual income of persons born in a given country, regardless of where that person now resides. If income per capita has any interpretation as a welfare measure, exclusive focus on the nationally resident population can lead to substantial errors of the income of the natural...

A warm welcome to ‘Agriculture for Development’ via ODI WebLog November 14th, 2007 at 15:59

image Agriculture has been in and out of fashion over the last half century. In the 1950s and early 1960s, it was seen as secondary to manufacturing industry but by the mid 1960s, concerns over population growth and a world food crisis, and the promise of the miracle seeds of the green revolution, made it central to development. It found itself relegated again in the 1980s, as macro-economic concerns dominated. Since the turn of the Century, however, its stock has once again been rising. This is reflected most notably in the publishing of the World Development Report 2008, entitled ‘Agriculture for Development’, which confirms the importance of agriculture to development and the policy agenda ODI, and many others, have been developing for the past decade. The backgroundIn 2000 the Millennium...

Periodical Formats: Print vs. Online via Forced Migration Current Awareness Blog February 27th, 2007 at 14:42

I have come across several periodical titles that I was not previously familiar with. It’s interesting to see how the periodical format has evolved and the blurring of print and online versions. Start with the Journal of Migration and Refugee Issues: This is a typical scholarly journal, peer-reviewed and published by an academic press. Its web site offers contents and a sample article online, so no significant online presence.Intervention: International Journal of Mental Health, Psychosocial Work and Counselling in Areas of Armed Conflict is also a peer-reviewed journal but aimed more particularly at professionals and practitioners. It’s produced by the War Trauma Foundation and published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. The WTF's journal site includes contents of the current...

Time to recognise the importance of internal migration for poverty reduction and development via ODI WebLog December 15th, 2006 at 17:10

image International Migrants Day, on the 18th of December, is usually marked by a number of international events to highlight the role of migrant workers in today’s globalised economy and draw attention to improving labour standards. However, the event passes unnoticed for those who have been championing the cause of internal migration. This is the migration of the poor who circulate in their millions between their villages and towns, plantations, agro-processing units, mines and quarries. Here there appears to be a serious mind block at the policy level. The dominant view in India, for example, is that migration is a symptom of rural distress. The costs – separation from families, increased drudgery for women left behind, risk of exposure to disease and missed school for accompanying...
