Yesterday, two men with leading roles in developing the internet sparred off on network neutrality in a debate hosted by the Center for American Progress. Net neutrality has become a hot topic in Washington this summer as lobbyists on both sides of the issue battle to sway legislators as a vote for a new telecommunications bill nears. Vint Cerf, co-creator of the TCP/IP protocol and chief internet evangelist for Google, and Dave Farber, referred to as one of the "grandfathers" of the internet and a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, have both been active in the fight on Capitol Hill and can agree that users should be able to access the content they want online. However they have very different views on how to make sure that happens. Cerf argues that legislation is necessary to...
Recently, New Orleans became the latest city to announce the development of a citywide wireless internet network – for the second time. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans opened up a wireless network to the public that previously had just been accessible to government workers, making it the first city in the United States to provide a free wireless internet connection, albeit just in some parts of the city. Officials say this move has been instrumental to emergency efforts and rebuilding, since many other communications systems were inoperable after the......

Goodmail will guarantee the delivery of emails to AOL and Yahoo! accounts if the mass sender pays a fee for each email. AOL and Goodmail argue that this will cut down on spam and phishing attempts, but opponents worry that it will take away the incentive for email providers to maintain their spam filters and will eventually lead to all non-certified messages going straight to the spam folder....

But students also posted messages about the protest where they hang out online –......
In a recent article published in First Monday, Alan R. Peslak calls for a universal approach to conquering the digital divide. He proposes that governments and nongovernmental organizations focus on implementing initiatives that encourage equality in information and communication technology.Initiatives pledging to improve ICTs, expand internet access to every family, or better use technology in governments and schools are not new. Peslak cites that the U.S. government supported information technology way back in the 1930s. And in 1993, the United States started the National Information Infrastructure initiative with the goal to coordinate government support to improve technology and infrastructure. Peslak credits this, along with the United States’ history of supporting technology, with...
